The most powerful winds on our planet are caused by cold air from the high Antarctic plateau picking up speed as it slides down the icy slopes to the coast. These gravity-driven ‘katabatic winds’ have been recorded at speeds up to 320 kilometres an hour. Passing over the ice, they polish its surface into a glassy finish.
